Blackford Chronicles Part II: Oversold
If you have no idea what this Blackford gibberish is all about, you missed my post yesterday. When you’re done reading here, go grab it for context.
So there I was, neck deep in the euphoria of our new family vehicular a Black Ford Expedition (Blackford). I’d done my daddy thing by providing, protecting and saving some cash and good vibrations came along with it.
In all honesty, I expected that kind of new car euphoria to last longer than an evening though (it didn’t).
We were set to hit the road on an 11 hour trip the next day to break it in.
With little ones belted to their seats, the DVD accessory is kinda important for sanity sakes. Fact is, that was the single biggest selling point for my wife and really the only thing she cared about.
Kid you not, I’d not even showed the new wheels to my wife before kid 1 freaks out that there are TV’s in the new Black Ford. He’s the kind of kid that can’t control his enthusiasm. A second later he’s running around the car and screaming the news to the neighbors.
Ah sure, let’s see how they look, son. I says. Semi-gloating in my purchase.
That’s when it all started.
Who would have tested the DVD players before driving off the lot? You just kind of assume that stuff works as advertised. Besides, I didn’t have any kids with me at the car lot, no reason to fire them up. Wish I had.
Dumb things were deader than the chicken I ate for dinner last night.
Hmmm…
So what does this have to do with you?
Have you ever gathered your guts on a Sunday night selling yourself on the idea of finally making a change and sticking to it?
“Yep. That’s it. It’s going down. Monday morning, everything changes?”
You’re going to do this and that and the other thing. Smash your morning routine and workout, be productive throughout the day, come home a conquering hero and spend quality time with the family before going to bed earlier than ever?
What did it feel like going to bed Sunday night?…
Prolly like I felt driving the car off the lot. A bit so euphoric you couldn’t sleep (so you go to bed late don’t you?)
What did it feel like Monday or Tuesday when the wheels came flying off the tracks despite your best intention and effort?
Prolly kinda like I felt after I first realized I’d allowed myself to be completely oversold.
What about you?
When it comes to making profound change in your life as an entrepreneur, do you oversell yourself only to get stuck in the same cycle of guilt and shame once the inevitable failure to take action and stick to change happens?
Dude, I feel you. That sucks. And it’s probably sucked for a long time.
Instead of overselling yourself and failing, why don’t you get on the horn with me for free and let’s talk about what’s REALLY possible for you?

(If a short call with me doesn’t blow your mind, literally, I’ll drop $500 towards your favorite charity).
But I don’t know how long I’ll be able to continue doing this (more details here).
Tomorrow, it gets real personal (read Part 3 now, in the future).
Go. Fight. Win.

P.S. In case you’re wondering, I took the Blackford back and they put in “new” DVD players that actually work but are on their last legs because they can’t handle my kids.
P.P.S. I actually went back and made a huge list of all the things I’d learned from this Blackford melt down. This was item 11 on a list of 24. No, I’m not going to share them all with you. But what you should do is be conscious of what’s going on in your life. Don’t let life just happen to you. If life were a classroom, what can you learn from it in order to score well on the final test? People tell me that I blow minds on these short calls I’ve done… but the biggest item on that list blew MY mind. I’ll share it with you later.
